Lisbon Airport Metro

While there is no railway station at Lisbon airport, there is a Metro station at Terminal 1. The Metro is modern, cheap to use and reliable, and it is the fastest way to get around the city. There are four Metro lines in Lisbon, blue, green yellow and red. The airport is served by the red line and connects to the other lines enabling you to reach many parts of the city.

The red line also stops at Lisbon Oriente Station (Gare do Oriente) at which you can connect with regional, inter-regional, intercity and high-speed trains to local, national and international destinations.

The Metro trains run every five to fifteen minutes, depending on the time of day, from 06:30 to 01:00. The journey time from the airport to the city centre is around twenty minutes and you can reach Gare do Oriente in approximately ten minutes.

For Lisbon public transport there are two fare zones, but the airport and all of the main touristic areas are inside zone 1. A single ticket to anywhere in zone 1 costs €1.45 and for €6.30 you can buy a twenty-four-hour ticket valid for unlimited travel on the Metro and buses (Carris). You can also purchase tickets including unlimited travel on CP urban trains. Children under four years of age travel free when accompanied by an adult.

In order to use the Metro, you must first buy a Viva Viagem card which is an electronic card that you use by holding it up to the contactless validation points at the stations. The card costs €0.50 and is valid for one year during which you can reload it an unlimited number of times. You can load it with single tickets or the twenty-four-hour tickets. It can also be used for "Zapping" with which you load the card with a fixed amount from €3.00 to €40.00 and use it on the network until the amount is used up.

The card can be bought and loaded at the automatic vending machines at all stations and, where available, the manned ticket offices. The ticket offices can be very busy, especially at peak times, but the machines are easy to use and the instructions are available in English. When you load the card, always keep the receipt in case there is a malfunction.

Full information on fares and ticket types can be found on the Metropolitano de Lisboa website.
