Lisbon Airport Transfers & Taxis

At Lisbon Airport the taxi ranks are clearly signed and located directly outside the arrivals halls of Terminals 1 and 2. The official taxis are mostly a cream colour, but some still have the old green and black livery. Under Portuguese legislation, no other vehicles are permitted to be in these colours making the taxis distinctive. Never be tempted to get into an unlicensed vehicle.

It is compulsory for all the taxis to have a meter installed and the rates that can be charged are set by the government. There are extra supplements charged for booking by phone, luggage carried in the boot and for pets. For suburban journeys outside of Lisbon, you will be charged for the driver’s return trip, including any road tolls. However, there is no additional charge for wheelchairs, guide dogs, pushchairs or hand luggage. If in doubt, clarify any extra charges with the driver before getting in.

The taxi drivers in Lisbon are generally friendly and many speak a little broken English at least. But they also have a reputation for overcharging, often by insisting on a set fare or taking a longer than necessary route. You can get around these by either making sure the meter is started or agreeing on a price that you are happy with. Most taxis also have GPS systems so, if you have the full address of your destination, including the postcode, you can make sure the driver enters it and you can see the route he should take.

The cars are equipped to provide receipts showing the car, driver and journey details and you should always ask for one in case of a complaint, or if you leave anything in the vehicle.

For passengers with reduced mobility, there are larger and adapted vehicles which can be requested from the information desks at the airport.

Private and Shared Transfers

Lisbon Airport is very close to the city centre so, for destinations within the city, taxis and public transport are affordable and convenient means of transport. But for longer journeys, taxis are not cost-effective and buses and trains involve changes.

For a door to door service to your home or holiday accommodation, unless you are hiring a car, a private transfer is the best option.

When you book and pay for your transfer in advance there are no hidden extras and your driver will be in the arrivals hall to meet you. If you book a return journey you can be assured that you will be at the airport in plenty of time for your flight.

If you are travelling to a popular destination such as one of the coastal resorts, a cheaper option is to book a shared transfer. On booking, you will be provided with a meeting point, either in the arrivals hall or at the vehicle. You might have to wait for other passengers and there could be a number of drop-off points on the journey, but it is cost-effective.
